From ItemSourcesOn June 19, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) Board of Directors selected Dr. John J. George to be the agency's next executive director. It is expected that George will assume the duties of executive director elect on Aug. 18 and begin a four-year term as executive director on Oct. 1.

"The board is very pleased that the BCIU is able to hire a new executive director with the experience and character references that Dr. George is bringing to us. He will be a wonderful asset to our organization," said Timothy Heffner, BCIU board president.

The appointment concluded a nationwide search that began in February following an announcement by BCIU Executive Director Dr. Nancy G. Allmon that she would retire on Sept. 30. Twenty applicants vied for the position. A large number of local school superintendents, community representatives, and BCIU staff members participated in focus groups and interviews with two final candidates.

George brings to the BCIU extensive administrative experience. He is currently serving as superintendent of Warwick School District in Lititz, a position he has held since July 2006. Prior to that, he served the district as assistant superintendent for two years. From 1993 to 2004, George served the Lancaster - Lebanon Intermediate Unit as director of exceptional children services and supervisor of special education.

George earned a B.A. in elementary and special education from George Washington University and holds M. Ed. and Ed.D. degrees in instruction and learning from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, he has completed post-doctoral studies in education administration at Temple University.

The BCIU has a staff of more than 1,100 employees and an operating budget of approximately $170 million. The educational service agency serves children, families, and schools, including the 18 public school districts of Berks County.
