A Birdsboro man wanted on charges in a fatal hit-and-run in Muhlenberg Township was captured in Harrisburg, authorities said July 15.
Daniel Espinal, 25, was taken into custody by Harrisburg police in a city bar. Officers were acting on a tip by someone who recognized him from his photo in the news media, said Sgt. Jeremy Kalis of the Berks County Sheriff’s Office warrants division.
Muhlenberg police charged Epinal on July 2 with failing to render aid and fleeing the scene of an accident, which resulted in death. Espinal is also charged with careless driving and operating a vehicle while his license is suspended.
Amy Otero, 40, of Reading, was struck and killed at Madison Avenue and Fifth Street Highway.
According to police:
The driver of the car left the scene without notifying police or stopping to render assistance to the victim.
The car, a silver Mercedes, was located by Reading police in a city apartment complex parking lot later that day. The vehicle was subsequently impounded and examined for evidence.
Witnesses stated Espinal was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his car hit and killed Otero, officials said.
