Shepherd of the Hills Church, BechtelsvilleDr. Alveda King will present a lecture on Jan. 24, 7 p.m., entitled "Keeping the Dream Alive." The lecture is free and open to the public.
Dr. King is the director of African American outreach for Gospel of Life, headed by Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. Formerly a college professor, she is also an author, writing Sons of Thunder: the King Family Legacy and I Don't Want Your Man, I Want My Own.
Alveda's honorary Doctorate of Laws was conferred by Saint Anslem College. She has also served in the Georgia State House of Representatives and is an accomplished actress and songwriter. She is a spokesperson for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, speaking about her regret for her abortion.
Following in the footsteps of her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Alveda has long worked as a civil rights activist, speaking out on issues that face society today - including the rights of the unborn.
Dr. King will also speak at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Jan. 25, designated as "Sanctity of Life" Sunday.

On Jan. 25, Pastor Dennis Christie will deliver the message. Following the 10:20 a.m. service, the 198th Annual Congregational meeting will be held. Reports will be given and the 2009 budget will be voted on. A soup and sandwich luncheon will follow the meeting.
Also the Youth Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Members of the Confirmation Class, their parents and mentors, will meet at 11:30 a.m.

The Pancake & Sausage Breakfast proceeds will benefit the Oley Cluster Mission Trip to Texas in February to clean up from Hurricane Ike. Pastor Zaiser will be going along on this Mission Trip.

The January Congregational Meeting will take place immediately following worship on Jan. 25. At that meeting we will share a potluck luncheon and review the annual report. All confirmed members are urged to attend.
Our Youth Group is getting together their annual "Souper Bowl Sunday" service project. This year the youth of our church will be collecting items to be assembled into school kits for needy children.
Congratulations to Dan and Kathy Kuser on the birth of their grandson, Kaleb Michael Goggins, born on Jan. 14, 7 lbs., 12 oz. He is the son of Jason & Diana (Kuser) Goggins. May God's blessings be upon this family!

St. Columbkill seniors has had a change in its trip to Tony Kenny's Ireland on March 16.
Our tour company has upgraded our bus to a 54-passenger giving us the ability to take five more people.
They have informed us that Caesar's has stopped taking buses for the current time, the good news is that the show has been moved to the Tropicana Casino, which is reported as a better and bigger show room experience.
Tony is joined by Ireland's Leprechaun of Laughter and Song, Richie Hayes; dancer-singer Victoria Kenny; the celebrated Dublin City Dancers; and traditional Irish musicians in a show noted as Ireland's No. 1 show for three consecutive years for its fun filled music, song, and dance. Our Human Concerns Committee is sponsoring a soup, "Super Bowl Canned Food Drive" and other canned goods drive to benefit the Boyertown Area Multi-Service Food Pantry the weekend of Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 for the Super Bowl.
Families are asked to bring canned items such as soups, juices, ravioli, beef stew, chili, fruits, tuna, salmon, chicken, spaghetti sauce, or canned milk to church to help feed those in need in the community this winter.
Collection containers representing both Super Bowl teams will be available for your donations, as well as a neutral collection container for those who can't decide who to cheer for or aren't a football fan.
Just drop your donation in the container that represents your choice for the Super Bowl winner. We'll see who wins the game! Either way, the community will win for sure!!!
New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church
The Cub Scouts are taking orders for hoagies they will make on Jan. 31. Suggested donation is $4. The Scouts will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to NHELC and will raise funds to defray the cost of summer camp. The last day to order is Jan. 25. Payment is due at the time of pickup at NHELC on Jan. 31 between 10:30 and 11 a.m.
Fifth graders will participate in a First Communion Workshop on Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will receive their first Communion on Feb. 1 at the 10:15 a.m. service.
The pastors will host a baptism instruction class on Jan. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. Families will celebrate baptisms at services on Apr. 19. Please call the church office to register.

The Young Adult Christian Singers (Y.A.C.S.) will rehearse at 8:40 a.m. that morning. Then at 9 a.m., Sunday School for all ages will be held. All are invited to join us. The Confirmation classes will meet in the social hall at 9 a.m.
On Jan. 26, Morning Bible Study will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the parlor. Then at 6:30 p.m., the Hand Bell Choir will practice. The Senior Choir will rehearse at 7:30 p.m. followed by Living for You at 8:30 p.m.
