D. Gene Hafer, 73, Amity Township, died on Sunday, July 26, 2009, in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where he was a patient for 17 days.

He was married for 52 years to his wife, Arlene L. (High) Hafer.

Born in Amity Township, he was a son of the late George and Ellen (Garber) Hafer

Mr. Hafer was a 1954 graduate of Amity High School and was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Amityville.

For 50 years he was an employee at Boyertown Supply. He worked as a manager before retiring in 2007.

He was a member of the Amity Athletic Club, where he served in all the board positions, including past president. He was also an Amity Township supervisor, serving periodically over a total of 40 years.

He also was a member of the Republican Club of Amity, the Amity Fire Company, the Monarch Fire Company and the Pike Township Sportsmans Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: David Hafer of Reiffton; Mary Ellen Hafer-Leftwich of Reading; George Hafer of Dallas, Pa.; Kevin Hafer of Amity; and Eric Hafer of Boyertown. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Hafer of Reading, and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, George Hafer, and three sisters, Anna, Evelyn and Alice.

Memorial Services were held Thursday, July 30 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1312 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, PA 19518. Interment in Oley Union Cemetery, Spangsville, was private.
