Donald "Cobey" F. Oberly, 79, Womelsdorf, died July 26, 2008, in VA Medical Center Hospice, Lebanon.He was the husband of Lois "Dolly" J. (Miller) Oberly, to whom he was married 53 years on April 9.
Born in Womelsdorf on Aug. 16, 1928, he was a son of the late Frank and Maude (Rhine) Oberly.
He worked as a full fashion knitter for 12 years at Nolde & Horst, Womelsdorf, and Ephrata Knitting Mill. He had been an X-ray welder at Quaker Alloy, Myerstown, for 30 years until retiring in 1990. He also served as a substitute custodian for Conrad Weiser School District and a crossing guard for Womelsdorf Borough for 17 years, last working Oct. 5, 2007.
He attended Womelsdorf High School and Reading High School of Welding.
Oberly was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Womelsdorf.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Oberly was a life member of Womelsdorf VFW, Womelsdorf Rod & Gun Club, Marion Rod & Gun Club and Womelsdorf Fire Co., where he had been a volunteer firefighter for 35 years. He was also a member of Marion Senior Citizens.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mitchell S., and wife, Christi Oberly, Millcreek Township; two grandchildren; a sister, Gloria, wife of George Riter, San Antonio; and two nieces.
Graveside service were Aug. 1 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Lebanon County. A procession will form at Grose Funeral Home Inc., 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, Friday at 11:30 a.m.
