State Police Reading report that at 8:21 a.m. on Feb. 26, Robert Haas, 48, Bernville, was driving northbound on Route 183 south of the intersection of Old Route 310 in Penn Township when his 2009 Ford Focus traveled over the double yellow line into the southbound lane.

Merleen Brown-Philippe, 53, Bernville, attempted to swerve to the right but her 2004 Chrysler Town & Country was struck on the drivers side rear by the Ford Focus. Brown-Philippe’s vehicle spun counter-clockwise and struck the west side guardrail where it came to rest.

Haas’ vehicle careened off the west side of the roadway and struck an embankment, then rolled onto its driver’s side.

Haas had to be extricated by mechanical means by Bernville Fire Company. He was observed to have cuts on his left hand and mouth and complained of head and neck pain. He was transported to Reading Hospital by Schuylkill Valley EMS for further medical treatment.

Brown-Philippe complained of minor left hip pain and was transported by Western Berks EMS to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for evaluation.

State Police also report that Haas was observed to be heavily intoxicated and criminal charges will be pending.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene by Spitler’s Towing.
