Tilden resident Tina Stanton approached the Hamburg School Board at the April 14 meeting, asking members to reconsider their choice of junior varsity girls' basketball coach.Stanton coached varsity girls basketball for the district from 2000 to 2003, when she says she was fired from the job. She currently coaches the Berks-mont Vipers, a registered AAU team.

"There is no vendetta on my part," Stanton said. She explained that she was concerned the current coaching staff didn't understand the social needs of the girls who play basketball.

"This is not about those men," she said, "It's about the girls."

Later, Athletic Director Aaron Menapace said, "We cannot base hiring on the person's gender." He also explained the district's coaches make sure the teammates get social time outside of practice.

The board voted to hire former school board member Michael Garman as head coach for junior varsity basketball at a stipend of $3,072. Board member Harold Lesher cast the only dissenting vote, saying his vote was "no" because of Garman's "public reaction at a former board meeting."
