Dear Editor:I was very upset to read last week's false headline alleging that I am urging gun control. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am urging gun safety and as I said in my remarks, "The overwhelming majority of hand guns are owned by responsible, law-abiding citizens who purchased their guns according to the law and who care for them properly, but to prevent accidental discharges, especially when children are present, proper precautions are needed to prevent a tragic accident." Thus I, and several law enforcement officials, including the sheriff and district attorney of Berks County, are making available gun locks to prevent children from wrongfully firing a pistol.
I am proud to consistency hold an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association, which teaches the importance of safety practices by gun owners. The right to own a weapon carries a responsibility to keep it from unintended hands and accidental discharges, particularly when children live in or frequent a gun owner's home or business.
Assisting owners to voluntarily meet their own responsibilities will prevent tragedies. It is not in any way "gun control" as the headline unfortunately stated.
