Helen Lawton (Taylor) Smith, 79, Reading, died Feb. 12, 2008, in the Berkshire Center, Exeter Township, following a brief illness.Ms. Smith was born in Philadelphia on Aug. 13, 1928, a daughter of the late Donald and Miriam (Cramp) Taylor.
She graduated from Moravian Seminary in 1946 and Drexel University in 1951, with a degree in education.
She married Norman Gilmore Smith in 1954, and they divorced in 1965.
Helen taught school for many years in Milltown, N.J., and Pleasantville, N.J.; and adult education in Atlantic City, N.J., as well as other places.
She was a member of the Red Barn Players, Milltown, and the Atlantic County Players, Pleasantville. She was an officer in the Single Parents Society in southern New Jersey.
She enjoyed sewing as a hobby and liked taking care of cats.
In addition to her former husband, Ms. Smith is survived by her children: Gregory Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Roger Smith (Peining), Woodstock, Md.; Lawrence Smith (Mary), Brattleboro, Vt.; and Miriam Thompson (James) Birdsboro.
Also surviving are her grandchildren: Drake, Miranda, Arthur, Daniel, Lauren Fox (Jason), and Holly Thompson; and her brother, Daniel Raymond Taylor, California.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Holly Ann Smith.
Funeral services were private.
