4 p.m. message to KU community from Dr. Cevallos

TO: The Kutztown University Community

FROM: F. Javier Cevallos, President RE: Update regarding the death of KU student

This morning I informed you of the untimely death of Kutztown University student Kyle Quinn in the Borough of Kutztown during the early morning hours. We have additional information that we can share at this time.

The incident appeared to be a senseless isolated random act of violence, and clearly was a tragic situation. It reminds us that we must always be vigilant with our efforts regarding safety and security.

The district attorney's office reported that the suspects were apprehended at the scene of the crime. Three non-student individuals were arrested and are awaiting arraignment before District Justice Wally Scott in Reading.

Our campus police officers are aware of the offense and continue to be vigilant for any suspicious activities or persons.

Unfortunately crime can happen anytime, anywhere without warning. Should anyone have any information pertaining to this senseless act of violence, they are encouraged to contact the Berks County District Attorney's Office at 610-478-6000, or the Kutztown Borough Police at 610-683-3545.

Sincerely, F. Javier Cevallos President

6:30 p.m. press statement from Bob Watrous, Kutztown University Dean of Students

This is a tragic time for the Quinn family and the Kutztown University family as well as all of us who call Kutztown our home.

We want to thank the Berks County District Attorney's office and the Kutztown Borough Police Department for their hard work today during this most difficult time.

Before we sent our first broadcast message alerting the campus community to this tragedy, counselors were working with directly affected students and continued to work throughout the day listening, consoling and counseling students.

Campus ministers were available throughout the day helping members of the university community deal with the grief and the incomprehensible nature of the incident. We are continuing these efforts for as long as necessary.

Kutztown University, the Borough of Kutztown and the surrounding community continue to be a safe environment but this incident reminds us that there is no immunity from falling victim to a violent act. The university produces numerous programs on safety awareness and our Public Safety and Police Services Department has an ongoing Crime Prevention Unit that is available to any student or student group

Early next week, representatives of the Borough, students and staff of the University will initiate a Neighborhood Watch program in the Borough to assist in keeping students and residents of our community safe.

Our hearts go out to the Quinn family at this most difficult time. Once funeral arrangements have been made a campus memorial service will be held.

The specific dates and times will be announced next week. This will be a private service open only to the University Community and members of the

Quinn family.

Thank you.
