Rotary January Students

Members of the Kutztown Rotary Club celebrated their Student of the Month ceremony on Jan. 9, honoring one student from each of Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights Area High School. Honored were Hannah Scheiry (left) for Brandywine Heights and Alexander Graff (right) for Kutztown.

Members of the Kutztown Rotary Club honored January Students of the Month Brandywine Heights student Hannah Scheiry for and Kutztown student Alexander Graff during a ceremony on Jan. 9.

One student from each of Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights Area High School is selected by school administrators each month throughout the school year for this award based collectively on academic achievement, school participation, and community contributions.

The students addressed the club members at the Student of the Month Ceremony where they demonstrated qualities of exemplary students. The ceremony occurs during the Kutztown Rotary meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at the Kutztown Tavern, where the weekly meetings for the club generally take place.

Hannah is the daughter of Donald and Rebecca Scheiry of Barto. Throughout high school, Hannah has participated in choir, marching band, and theater, where she is the current president of the Drama Club; has participated in the high school play the last three years; and has worked stage crew and the light and sound boards. School activities for Hannah also include the tennis and swim teams, the juggling club, and the Mini-THON committee.

In the community, Hannah is very active in her church where she has participated in a rescue mission trip to Houston and the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit, among many other community activities. She is also a lifeguard and/or swim coach for the Upper Perkiomen YMCA, Boyertown YMCA, Topton Memorial Pool and Topton Torpedos.

Alex is the son of Darryl and Donna Graff of Kempton. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is currently ranked 2nd in his graduating class. He has been active in sports throughout high school including soccer, basketball, and baseball.

Alex is also very active in community volunteer work including work with the Leo Club, Kutztown Strong, Friend Inc, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, among others. He also has held a summer job at Bailey Wood Products and a summer and school year job at Five Points Cricket Farm.

Along with their accomplishments, these students have their eye on the future as well. Hannah plans to attend Lebanon Valley College for exercise science and then Thomas Jefferson for occupational therapy. Alex plans to study environmental science and is still narrowing down his college choices.

The members of the Kutztown Rotary Club are proud to recognize these students for their high school achievements and wish them the best of luck in their future college endeavors.
