A 19-year-old Kutztown University student was arrested on child pornography charges on March 13, according to the Berks County District Attorney's Office.
Brendan Geier of Madison, N.J., who resides at Lehigh Hall on KU’s Campus, has been charged with sexual abuse of children related to dissemination and possession of child pornography.
“Kutztown University abhors all forms of abuse and will not tolerate it on our campus,” Kutztown University officials said in a statement to media. “We will continue to fully cooperate and work with the Berks County District Attorney’s Office on this matter.”
The Berks County Detective’s Office received a complaint on Sept. 21, 2018, from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the possession and uploading of child pornography through Skype, according to a media release from the Berks County District Attorney's Office. Microsoft had reported to NCMEC that seven digital images of suspected child pornography had been uploaded on Sept. 17, 2018. The I.P. address was identified and provided to the Berks County Detectives Office.
On Nov. 9, 2018, Berks County Detectives and the Kutztown University Police Department served a search warrant at Geier’s dorm room at Lehigh Hall on KU’s campus.
As a result of this search, Berks County Detectives seized a laptop computer and an iPhone. A forensic examination on these devices led to the discovery of numerous digital images of suspected child pornography.
On March 12, the Berks County Detectives Office filed criminal charges against Geier at District Judge Gail Greth’s Office. On March 13, Geier surrendered to the Berks County Detectives at their office. He was accompanied by his attorney.
Geier was escorted to the Central Processing Center and has been turned over to the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.
