Christina Mauro, a junior at Kutztown Area High School, recently won the Optimist Club of Kutztown's annual essay contest. This year, entries were based on the theme of "I Want to Make a Difference Because..."Mauro's essay best exhibited what the Optimist Club was looking for, and was chosen from dozens of other welldeserving entries.
After winning first place in the contest, Mauro's essay was then entered in the Pennsylvania Upper District Delaware Contest, where she competed against winners from 19 other clubs within the district.
Despite competing against other award-winning essays, Mauro placed third overall in the contest. Members of the Optimist Club were not surprised with the success the essay has brought her.
"Miss Mauro did a wonderful job of articulating this year's theme. She expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of third place," said Kutztown Optimist Club President Andy Schlegel.
The Optimist Club of Kutztown has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for over 20 years and has been active within the Kutztown community since 1981. Throughout the year, they are involved in everything from Easter egg hunts to youth sports programs.
