A Caernarvon Township man threw a partially filled gasoline can at his ex-girlfriend, then flicked a cigarette lighter at her, causing her leg to catch on fire, police said Wednesday.

Donald P. Trent II, 51, was arrested after the incident shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police were notified of a victim of a domestic assault incident that occurred at Trent’s residence in the 3200 block of Main Street in Morgantown. The victim was in Reading Hospital for treatment of second-degree burns to her right leg.

The woman said that she went to Trent’s home to collect some of her belongings. She and Trent argued. When she went to leave, he threw the gas can at her and flicked the lighter at her, causing the fuel to ignite.

It was unclear how she was transported to the hospital.

Trent was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Following arraignment Tuesday night before District Judge Ann L. Young in Reading Central Court, he remained free to await a hearing.
