An Ohio woman was hurt Monday afternoon when a dump truck collided with the tractor-trailer she was driving on Route 61 at Ashley Way, Ontelaunee Township.
Northern Berks Regional police gave the following account:
Lacey Wertz, 30, was driving a tractor-trailer south on Route 61 at about 3:49 p.m. when she tried to make a left turn onto Ashley Way.
Victor Sacks, 68, of Hamburg was northbound on Route 61 when Wertz made the turn in front of him. Sacks was unable to stop in time and his dump truck collided with the trailer of the rig just behind the cab.
Wertz told officers she had a green light and thought she also had a green arrow for a left turn but was mistaken, police said. Wertz was cited with making an improper turn.
Both Wertz and Sacks were taken to Reading Hospital. Wertz was complaining of an arm injury. Sacks was not hurt but was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution.
One lane of southbound traffic was able to get around the wreckage. Northbound traffic was detoured onto Ashley Way to Ontelaunee Drive back to Route 61.
Patrolman Gregg Falk, who investigated the crash, said the intersection was tied up for about an hour.
Leesport and Temple fire companies and Northern Berks Regional Ambulance responded to the call and assisted at the scene. Leesport Fire Police directed traffic around the crash site.
