Morris F. Wagner, 90, of Centerport, died Aug. 25, 2008, at 9:40 p.m. in Manor Care Health Services, Muhlenberg Township, where he had been since July 22. He was taken there from St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been for one week.Morris was the husband of Pauline K. (Rentschler) Wagner, to whom he would have been married 70 years today. They were married on Aug. 27, 1938.
Born in Centre Township, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Emma M. (Bagenstose) Wagner.
He worked for 38 years as a carpenter with Union Local 492, working with many different contractors in the area. He first worked as a full-fashion knitter for Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing.
He was a member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Township, and a member of the Centerport Sunday School, where he served as president for 38 years.
He was the mayor of Centerport from 1978 to 1994 and 1994 to 1998. He was also elected to the Centerport Borough Council for 20 years.
He was a charter member of Central Berks Fire Company, Centerport, and its beneficial association; a member of the Shartlesville Fire Company and its beneficial association; and a life member of Shoemakersville Fire Company and Goodwill Fire Company and their beneficial associations.
He also was a member of the Lenhartsville Fish and Game Association, Ontelaunee Grange 1617, and Vaux Lodge 406 F&AM, Hamburg, where he held the position of steward.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Gerald L., widower of Virginia (Burton) Wagner, Lenhartsville; Larry L, husband of Kathy I. (Correll) Wagner, Shoemakersville; and Bruce A., husband of Ann Marie (Hertzog) Wagner, Riverview Park. Also surviving is a brother, Lawrence H., husband of V. Pearl (Spraut) Wagner, Leesport; a sister, Helen I. (Wagner), widow of Luther Hill, a guest at the Laurel Center, Tilden Township; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Services were Aug. 30 at Leibensperger Funeral Homes Inc., Centerport, with the Rev. Paul E. Buzzard officiating. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tilden Township. Vaux Masonic Lodge services were Aug. 29. The family suggests memorial contributions to Vaux Masonic Lodge, PO Box 24, Hamburg, Pa. 19526.
