Miller-Keystone Blood Center issued an urgent appeal for blood donors with the O-negative, A-negative, B-negative and AB-negative blood types, as well as the O-positive blood type and platelets.
The center is in critical need of donors with RH-negative blood types, according to Qiana Cressman, director of donor recruitment and development.
The supply of RH-positive blood types is stable, she said.
“Blood donations typically decrease this time of year due to holiday activity, combined with inclement weather and seasonal illnesses,” Cressman said in a news release. “However, more than 450 donors are needed every day in our community to help in the care of cancer patients, accident victims, premature infants and others requiring lifesaving transfusions at our regional hospitals. The demand at our community hospitals remains steady."
As incentive, donors will receive a long sleeve blood center T-shirt through Dec. 22.
Those donating from Dec. 23 through 31 will receive double bonus points that can be exchanged for items in the center's online donor store.
Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be feeling healthy. Blood donors cannot have given within the past eight weeks, but platelet donors are eligible within eight days.
All 16-year-olds must have parental consent.
