Leesport Christmas tree lighting: at the intersection of Main and Lee streets kicks off at 6 p.m. with live music performed by Mount Laurel Brass. Before the lighting, personalize an ornament for the tree, write letters to Santa, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Santa arrives on his custom sleigh around 7 p.m. escorted by the Leesport Fire Company. Event is entirely sponsored by Leesport businesses; Dino’s Wings and Things, Geissler Tree Farm Inc., and DJSLAMM Productions. The event is free.
Shoey Fire Co. Christmas Tree Sale: Fridays 5 to 8 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Shoemakersville Fire Co., 300 Church Ave., Shoemakersville, to left of fire company under pavilion. Strausstown Fire Company’s Holiday Breakfast : 8 a.m. to noon at Strausstown Fire Co., 50 East Ave., Strausstown. Full breakfast menu. Proceeds benefit the Apparatus Fund.
Berks County Genealogical Society open house: noon to 4 p.m. at Society library, Room 413 in the
GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St., Reading. Santa Clause will be there. Kids of all ages welcome. We will also have a free one-hour "How to Get Started" class at 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.
Red Kettle Benefit Concert: 4 p.m., St. John's Lutheran Church, 99 Church St., Hamburg. Doors open 3:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Featuring Salvation Army Pen-Del Ensemble, Choral groups and local musical talent. Free will offering will be taken during the concert to benefit the Hamburg Salvation Service Center. Light refreshments served after concert.

Canned Good Nights: Hamburg Area School District will admit free any spectator who donates 3 or more canned goods or non-perishable food items at the gate on the night of the event. All items are donated to Northern Berks Food Pantry. Dates for these events are Dec. 11 HS Girls Basketball vs Kutztown 6 p.m. start; Dec. 15 HS Boys Basketball vs Panther Valley 6:30 pm start; and Dec. 18 HS Wrestling vs Brandywine 6:30 p.m. start.
Hamburg Area Historical Society Christmas party: with fun, music, and refreshments. 7 p.m. at Hamburg Bible Church, 731 Port Clinton Ave. Cookie donations are welcome and raffle tickets are available for a print of the painting of the view from the North Lookout on Hawk Mountain, painted by Tim Barr.
Berks County Patriots: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Leesport Farmer's Market. All welcome. Free. Christmas Party honoring veterans. All veterans invited. Performances by Commissioner Christian Leinbach (singing & playing guitar); Muhlenberg Jr. ROTC; local legislators will speak; Schuylkill Valley students composing letters to veterans; cake cutting ceremony. Keystone Military Families recipients of donations. Bring wrapped gifts for their kids; nonperishable foods, new/slightly used clothing; toiletries.
