Berks County Singers perform at Carnegie Hall

A group of singers from Holy Guardian Angels Regional School, Berks County, has been selected to participate in a 3 day choral residency program, Nov. 21 – 23, culminating with a concert performance at Carnegie Hall, New York City.

The singers of the newly formed Honor Choir, 24 girls from grades K-8 will join approximately 50 other children, a full adult SATB chorus, world-class professional soloists, and the New England Symphonic Ensemble to perform John Rutter's Mass of the Children. The Mass will be conducted by John Rutter, the world-renowned English conductor and composer.

MidAmerica Productions, Inc., the company that is handling the residency and concert has represented 3500 choral groups and instrumental ensembles. The Berks County group is only the second elementary level chorus to be accepted from Pennsylvania, and according to the MidAmerica spokesperson most of the choral groups accepted are at the high school level or above including college, and adult church and community choirs. She added, 'On the whole, there have not been many elementary school-based choirs that I can recall during my 23 years with MidAmerica, … the percentage of overall participation is most likely in the single digits.' High artistic standards, committed performers, and large, enthusiastic audiences have combined to make MidAmerica Productions the largest independent producer of classical concerts in New York City.

The Honor Choir, under the direction ofTina Katella, Kutztown, will be rehearsing several times a week through the summer to prepare for this prestigious concert. Additionally, the parents have been working hard to secure funding to offset the travel and lodging costs for the trip. The generosity of several corporate sponsors and the proceeds of a few fund-raising activities have provided the group with a strong start, but a substantial amount of money is still needed to meet the fundraising goal. Upcoming activities include a Beef and Beer Dinner Dance and Silent Auction to be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 beginning at 6:00 PM at HGA, and Applebees Breakfast on Saturday, July 29 from 8 – 10 AM at the Applebees on 5th Street Highway in Reading. The group is also accepting tax-deductible personal and corporate sponsorships. For more information, please call the school at 610-929-4124 or email
