A fire extensively damaged a Rockland Township home on Jan. 24, Lyons Fire Company reported.

Home owners Vasile and Florentine Boicu of Lobachsville Road smelled smoke and called 9-1-1 at 6:27 a.m. Firefighters arrived minutes later and found heavy fire and smoke in the kitchen area.

The fire was knocked down within 30 minutes, stated Lyons Fire Chief Nathan Keller who directed the efforts.

'The firefighters made an excellent attack, and kept the fire confined to the kitchen,' said Keller.

Volunteer firefighters from Lyons, Kutztown, Oley, Topton, Ruscombmanor and Earl Township fought the fire in the zero degree temperatures. An EMS crew from Fleetwood was also on the scene, there were no injuries.

Damage was estimated at about $100,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to be accidental starting near a microwave oven.

The family could not stay in the home due to the smoke and water damage. They will be staying with relatives.
