The victims of the fatal Nov. 14 Interstate 78 Windsor Township crash have been identified by State Police.
One of the victims of the crash has been identified as Kathryn M. Schurtz, 35. from Jersey City, N.J. Cause of death is pending the report from the Forensic Pathologist.
The second victim has been identified as Joseph Kearney, 42, from Jersey City, N.J. Cause of death is pending the report from the Forensic Pathologist.
State Police Hamburg are investigating the fatal crash that occurred on I-78 westbound at mile marker 32.5, Windsor Township at 2:38 p.m. on Nov. 14.
West bound traffic was slowing/stopped in both westbound lanes for a single lane construction zone around mile marker 29 westbound. A tractor trailer was travelling westbound and was unable to stop for the traffic ahead. That tractor trailer first struck a passenger vehicle. That vehicle was then pushed into the rear of a tractor trailer. The chain reaction crash consisted of 5 tractor trailers and one passenger vehicle. There was heavy fire involving two tractor trailers and the passenger vehicle. There were 3 injuries and 2 fatalities.
The highway was completely shut down for more than four hours. East bound traffic began moving in one lane around 7 p.m. Both west bound lanes remained closed for the investigation and clean up. West bound I-78 opened Nov. 15 at 3:30 a.m.
Numerous Fire Departments from Berks, Lehigh, Lebanon, and Schuylkill Counties assisted at the scene.
