Boasting seventeen travel teams playing in the Lehigh Valley and Inter-County Soccer Leagues, the Quakertown Soccer Club kicked off the season this past weekend.The Under-14 Girls began their first season in the ICSL Elite Division with a 2-0 victory over Towamencin. Amanda Hawthorne and Shelly Cowan tallied the goals, with Devin Reed contributing an assist. The defensive play was solid, limiting the Towamencin attack to a handful of opportunities that were easily handled by goal-keeper Brittany Terra.
The Under-10 Girls "A" Team kicked off their season with a 6-0 victory over the club's "B" Team. Carley Peacher and Katie Crouthamel each tallied a pair of goals, with Cassidy Owens and Sydnie Ziegler netting single goals. Meghan Woulfe and Owens combined for the shutout in goal.
The Under-11 Girls battled Council Rock to a 0-0 tie. Olivia Maseloff had an outstanding game in goal, with strong defensive play by Taylor Herd and Megan Johnson in front of her to record the shutout for the Blue Lightning.
The Under-13 Boys also battled to a draw against Yardley Make field. Trailing 1-0 on a first half penalty kick, Kyle Woulfe struck for a second half equalizer to gain the tie. With Quakertown pushing for the game winner, the game was called 20 minutes into the second half due to the heavy rains. Matt Overholtzer provided the goalkeeping efforts for the Cougars.
In other action, the Under-13 Boys "B" fell 3-0 to PA Rush and the Under-12 Boys dropped a 3-1 decision to YMS Tornados. The Under-15 Girls defeated Hulmeville 4-1 to round out ICSL action, while he Under-9 Girls Blue Destroyers fell to Parkland Rockets in the Lehigh Valley opener for both teams. Unfortunately a number of other league games were washed out on Saturday by heavy rains.
Prior to the start of league player, a number of the club's teams were in pre-season tournaments, registering a number of solid results. The Under-13 Boys had an impressive showing at the Lehigh Valley United/Lou Ramos Tournament, defeating ENCO United's U-14's 2-1 in the final of the U-13/14 Division. The Under-13 Girls took 3rd place at the Oley Valley Tournament. After defeating Wilson 4-1 in the opener, Quakertown fell to the hosts 2-1, with Oley Valley scoring the game winner in the last ten seconds of the game. Sunday morning the team coasted to a 6-0 win over Fleetwood before defeating Wilson again 4-0.
The Under-14 Girls took the championship at the Kids Peace Tournament in Allentown. The team started slow on Saturday, falling 2-1 in their first match against Tredifryn-Easttown and then tying Greater Chester Valley 2-2. Sunday morning the team defeated Southern Lehigh 1-0 to claim 2nd place and a spot in the final. In the final, Quakertown defeated Greater Chester Valley 1-0 to take top honors. The Under-10 Boys claimed second place in their division behind Parkland, while the Under-12 Girls claimed third place in the Red Division.
The club had four girl's teams in action at the Whitewater Cup on Labor Day weekend, walking away with one championship and three runners-up spots. The Under-18 Girls won all three of their games on the way to the title, defeating the Saylorsburg Herricanes, Mountaintop Rush and Lititiz United. The Under-15 Girls battled thru group play with ties against Plains Power and Bloomsburg Force, who also tied their game. Thru tiebreakers, Quakertown ended up in a 7 v 7 match against the Force, with the Kamikazees coming out victories. In the final, Quakertown fell to Valley, finishing second. The Under-14 Girls rebounded from an opening game 1-0 loss to USTA to soundly defeat Mountaintop Avalanche 4-0 and Shrewsbury Killer B's 5-0. The 2-1-0 recond also game them second place. The Under-11 Girls also fell in their first game, but rebounded for a win and tie against the Cannons and Warriors to claim second place.
