Stemming from snow squalls and white out conditions from recent snowfall, a chain of several multi-vehicle crashes involving 14 vehicles injured three people on Interstate 78 westbound in Windsor Township on Jan. 30. Injuries were not life threatening.
State Police Hamburg was dispatched to the scene at about 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 30. Police report that a total of eight commercial trucks were involved with one commercial truck driver reporting injuries to his hand. A total of six passenger vehicles/pickup trucks were involved with two passenger vehicle drivers reporting non-life-threatening injuries to their hands or arms.
The multi-vehicle crashes closed I-78 westbound for approximately four hours.
State Police report that the initial crash involved three commercial vehicles that crashed because of the white out conditions. No injuries were reported.
The second crash involved a tractor trailer which rear ended a passenger car amid the incident. No injuries were reported.
The third crash involved three commercial vehicles and a pickup truck. Tractor trailer #1 had stopped due to the above crashes and conditions and was rear ended by a commercial “roll-off” truck. The impact pushed tractor trailer #1 into a pickup truck and into the tractor trailer from the second crash, which had already impacted a passenger car and was crashed in the travel lane. The driver of the roll-off truck was treated for minor injuries to his hand.
The fourth crash involved two commercial vehicles, two pickup trucks, and a cargo van. The first unit was the roll-off truck from the third crash, which had already crashed into a tractor trailer. A pickup truck crashed into the side of the roll-off truck which was disabled in the left travel lane due to the previous crash. A cargo van crashed into the rear of the roll-off truck. Another pickup truck crashed into the rear of the cargo van. An otherwise uninvolved tractor trailer was in the right-hand lane of travel next to the roll-off truck and was struck by both the cargo van and the pickup truck as they crashed.
The driver of the roll-off was treated for minor injuries to his hand. The driver of the cargo van was transported by EMS to Reading Hospital for an injury to his hand.
The fifth and final crash occurred when a sedan crashed into the back of the tractor trailer from the fourth crash. The driver of the sedan was treated by EMS for an injury to his wrist.
