Reading has always had a rich theater background and those of us of a certain age can recall all of the wonderful shows we were so privileged to attend and perform in year after year. We were part of a wonderfully close-knit group of people.
Because of that and our family's love of the theater, we have decided to start a new theater company here in Reading. We are most excited to become another entertainment choice in this area.
We have named it Brickhouse Theater, a way of honoring my father who was a brick mason as well as teaching trowel trades at Reading –Muhlenberg Vo-Tech.
Symbolically, the name represents many pieces coming together to form a unified and strong product. And to us, that is exactly what theater personifies. My dad always said that the foundation needed to be in place correctly for the finished product to be strong. We have made sure that our foundation is strong to insure that our company will be able to provide consistent performances.
Our goal is to bring professional elements to our productions, whether in the role of director, choreographer or possibly one or two members of the cast. We will then hold local auditions to utilize all of the wonderful talent we have in Reading and the surrounding areas.
Our goal is not just to produce shows but also to educate. We are blessed with a myriad of wonderfully talented people who work in professional theater in New York City and around the United States. They will be coming into Reading to do master classes in voice, drama and dance. We hope to give local performers the opportunity to work side by side with individuals who do this for a living.
We are doing something a little bit different to launch the company. Our first production is 'The Marvelous Wonderettes.' This time, the cast is an all -professional cast from New York City and Philadelphia, and will be directed and choreographed by Yoav Levin, a member of the dance faculty at AMDA in New York City.
To the best of my knowledge, this show has never been performed in this area; so the title of the show may not be familiar to you. But, believe me, this will be a show you will want to see.
This smash Off - Broadway hit takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School Prom where you will meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to the girls performing such classic 50s and 60s songs as 'Lollipop,' 'Dreamlover,' 'Stupid Cupid,' 'Lipstick on Your Collar,' 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,' 'It's My Party' and over 20 other classic hits.
You've probably never had this much fun at a prom and you won't forget 'The Marvelous Wonderettes.' It's a musical trip down memory lane.
The performances will take place on: 8 p.m. Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6. Tickets are available at the door for all performances.
We hope that you will come see what we are about and hopefully, consider auditioning for us in the future. We would love to have you join us as audience members and participants.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 610-670-7537. Advance tickets are available online at http://brickhousetheater.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are available at the door for all performances.
We plan to create a theater family-a community of performers who love to work with other like-minded individuals.
