This column will look back in the past at the local sports news.

1976

-In the Region 5 American Legion Baseball tournament, Boyertown played 4 games and won all 4, including 3 against Souther Lehigh. A 10-2 win over Coplay was capped with a 5-run bottom of the third. Mark Nuscher and Leon Sendecki led the offense with 2 hits each. In an 8-4 win over Souther Legion, a 4 run fifth made it 6-4 for Boyertown. Pete Hiryak, Don Weller, and Mark Lucas responsible for the offense, Weller being a perfect 4-4. A 2-1 loss overshadowed a Tony Lambert home run and a triple by Hiryak as the Bears lost in ten innings. Bob Kish was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 game vs. Southern Legion. He struck out 6 and allowed only 4hits.

-VFW defeated Liberty in a best of 3 games series in the divisional playoffs. The Pirates beat the Cubs to take the Minor Division. and the Tigers won the regular season championship, but the Braves beat out the Cardinals to become champions in the Knee-Hi Division

-In a Berks County Valley League Boyertown Bear-Cubs finished 13-2 with both losses coming to Governor Mifflin Juniors.

1986

-Boyertown played 4 non-league games and won all four by a combined score of 54-6! A 20-0 stomping of Temple set the tone for the remaining games. Two wins over Endicott and a victory over Fort Washington completed the week-long sweep.

-Ann Royer won the 100-yard dash and took second in the 400-meter relay. She won the dash with a time of 20.6 seconds and her runner-up time was 1:44. She was competing in the 65-69 age group. Mary Jane Schneider took second place in the three-mile run in 36:22 and in the 1600-meter in 9:40. She was competing in the 60-64 age bracket.

-Oley captured the Region 2 title thanks in part to a 4-3 win over Southern Area. Mike Distasio, Mike Stern, and Scott Smith all collected the runs for the win. Distasio scored on a groundout after singling and stealing second. Stern scored on a wild throw to home twice and Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Distasio.

1996

-After being down 8-0, Birdsboro's comeback came up short with a 15-12 loss at the hands of North Parkland. A four run third cut the deficit in half. Chris Papst singled and drove in two and Jason Delewski had a 2 RBI double. A 2 run bomb by Mike Bianco and a single by Nick Mattioni made it 12-11, but that was as close as Birdsboro could get.
