This column will look back in the past at the local sports news.1975
-Alan Wunderlich threw a five-hitter and had 10 strikeouts in the Amity Midgets 7-4 win over Elverson to take the division title and qualify for the county playoffs. Wunderlich was also 4-4 with two RBI's and Ron Flack added two hits.
-In the playoffs the Amity Midgets beat Wernersville 13-12. Down 12-10 in the seventh Ron Flack hit a single with the bases loaded to tie the game and then Jerry Farrell followed with the game winning RBI. Then Amity beat Shillington 9-6 when Alan Wunderlich broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run triple. Ed Sheetz went 3-4 and Joe Inmon was 2-3.
-Mike Shearer struck out an amazing 19 Riverview Park hitters for the Amity Mites in their 3-2 playoff win. Shearer also singled home Keith Haigh for the winning run in the seventh inning.
-Hal Boyer had three RBI's on two hits to lead the Amity Mites past the Wyomissing A's 7-2. Keith Haigh added two RBI's and had a triple while Tim Shearer had a double and scored two runs. Mike Shearer was the winning pitcher and he had 10 strikeouts.
-Two area swimmers broke records in the Berks County Swimming Association's Senior Championships. Amity A.C.'s Cindy Shirey won the 200 meter individual medley and broke the record in the 200 meter back. Ron Burinsky of the Maple Springs swim team broke his own record in the 100 meter back.
-In the Daniel Boone Colt League the Birdsboro Sportsman Club sponsored team went 14-1-1 under the direction of head coach Steve Rathman and assistant coach Bruce Yeager. The Sports outscored their opponents 188-82 during the season.
-The Amity A.C. swim team's eight and under boys' set new records. Bryan Betham in the 25 meter breast, Michael Hanth in the 25 meter free and the foursome of Betham, Hanth, Mark Johnson and Kris Meloy in the 100 meter free relay all were new record holders this year.
-Amy Betham set a new record also for the Amity A.C. swim team in the 11-12 girls' 50 meter breast. Scott Ledig was another new record holder in the 13-14 boys' 100 meter back.
-Amity A.C. swimmers placed in the Berks County Age Group Championships. Josh Beggs competing in the 9-10 boys' age group took ninth in the 100 meter individual medley and tenth in the 50 meter breast. Scott Ledig placed third in the 100 meter back, sixth in the 100 meter butterfly and eleventh in the 50 meter free in the 13-14 boys' age group.
-The same could be said for some of the Amity A.C. girls' swimmers. Amy Betham placed three times in the 11-12 girls' age group. She was third in the 50 meter breast, sixth in the 100 meter free and eighth in the 50 meter free. Jacqueline Horchover placed seventh in the 100 meter breast in the 13-14 girls' competition.
-Shelia Martin of Birdsboro was one of the top three place winners in Topton's Fifth Annual 5-K Run for the female 40-49 age group. The race attracted 210 runners from a wide area stretching all the way to Chapel Hill, NC.
-Adrienne Simmons of Douglassville, an eighth grader at the Daniel Boone Junior High School, was named an All-Star at the Keystone State Invitational Basketball Camp held at Albright College. She was also nominated for best point guard, most valuable player, most outstanding player, and camper of the week. Her camp team won the championship.
-The Birdsboro White Sox finished the season 14-8. Chris Pabst led the team with a .541 average and had five home runs, 42 RBI's, 40 runs, and 26 stolen bases. John Runkle was .538 with two home runs, 31 RBI's, 23 runs, and 22 stolen bases. Chris Pabst was also the leading pitcher with a 4-1 record and a 2.26 ERA with 59 K's. Brian Noecker was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 27 strikeouts.
-A number of Maple Springs swimmers took first place in the Boyertown Long Course Invitational. All three of these boys' won the 50 meter breast. Nathan Palm took first for the boys' 15 and over age group, in the 9-10 boys' Jacob Peterson took first and in the eight and under boys' David Owens won.
-In the Green Valley Odd-Age Invitational two Maple Springs swimmers took first place finishes. Amy Donovan won the 50 meter breast for the 10-11 girls'. Michael Owens set three new meet records when he won the 100 meter intermediate, the 50 meter fly, and the 50 meter
