EXETER - A Birdsboro man was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Route 422 in the township early New Year's Day after his vehicle struck a utility pole, officials confirmed.
Township Police Officer David Bentz said Bruce V. Cozzone, 56, of Birdsboro, was traveling east on Route 422 around 1:15 a.m. when he lost control of his Chrysler PT Cruiser and traveled off the road, striking a utility pole.
Police and a Berks County coroner's office official confirmed Cozzone was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner's official said no autopsy was scheduled.
Police said one lane of travel was open while the crash was being investigated and the utility pole was replaced.
Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
"We're waiting for the results of the blood-alcohol test," Bentz said.
Bentz said Cozzone, the single occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt.
In addition to Exeter Township Police, Exeter Township Fire, Birdsboro Fire Company, and Exeter EMS responded to assist at the scene.
