BOYERTOWN - Boyertown senior running back Chris McGee was inadvertently poked in the eye during the first quarter, causing him to lose his right contact lens.
With the right lens lost, McGee had to take out the left lens as well, leaving him with some definite vision problems.
"I had trouble seeing - the score, the time left, the down, the ball," said McGee. "It made it tough."
McGee's vision may have been impaired - at least until his mother rushed home and delivered replacement lenses at halftime - but he certainly had no trouble finding his way into the end zone.
McGee scored on runs of four, 71 and three yards to spark Boyertown to a convincing 35-20 victory over Owen J. Roberts in a Pioneer Athletic Confer-ence game last Friday night.
McGee finished with 123 yards on 12 carries and caught two passes for 30 more yards. Sopho-more quarterback David Crognale, deftly operating the no-huddle offense, added 141 yards on 23 carries and threw for 112 yards as the Bears rolled up 396 yards of offense.
Boyertown, which improved to 3-1 in the league and 3-2 overall, was a little shaky at the beginning, turning the ball over on two of its first three plays from scrimmage. But the Wildcats (1-3, 1-4) couldn't capitalize on Boyertown's largesse.
"And a good football team will," said OJR coach Tom Barr. "We're not there yet. We're not a good football team yet. We have to work a little bit better.
"The first half we had some busted plays. We're playing with two sophomore quarterbacks. We started with Danny Miller but pulled him after two series. We put Jeff Kelly in. He made some connections and drove us down for the first score. But just like Danny, he made some mistakes. It's hard. They're learning. They'll get better. We'll get better."
After turnovers on their first two series, the Bears put together a nice, 83-yard scoring drive. Crognale's 52-yard pass to Nole Saylor helped set up McGee's four-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead.
On Kelly's first drive after replacing Miller at quarterback, he guided the Wildcats on a 75-yard scoring drive. Kelly rolled to his left and hit Adam Beck with a gorgeous 36-yard TD pass to make it 7-7.
But, on the first play after OJR's score, McGee swept around the right side, lowered his left shoulder and knocked OJR defender Jon Raymond backward before speeding 71 yards into the end zone for a 14-7 lead.
"If something's not there, I'll put my head down and get what I can," said McGee, who also intercepted a pass. "I was lucky enough that he (Raymond) fell down."
Crognale followed that up with a 26-yard touchdown run for a 21-7 halftime lead.
Boyertown's offensive line of Tyler Sands, Justin Giles, Scott Schaeffer, Justin Bernhard and Keith Schauder dominated their OJR counterparts, opening plenty of holes for Crognale and McGee.
"The line did a heck of a job," said McGee. "They did a great job pushing, giving me holes to run through. They made me and David look good. They're the ones that do it for us."
Crognale and McGee split 11 carries on a 74-yard scoring march, McGee going three yards for the score and a 28-7 Boyertown lead in the third quarter. Crognale completed the Bears' scoring with a 17-yard TD pass to Brian Rakowski on the first play of the fourth quarter.
"It was a good win," said Crognale. "We just had a slow start. But we picked things up. We wer-en't too worried about it.
"I think the no-huddle definitely kept them off guard. That's pretty much what happens to every team we play. I think it's good. I like it better than a huddle."
After back-to-back impressive wins, Boyertown is looking like a team to be reckoned with in the PAC-10.
"I think we've definitely come on as a team," said Crognale. "The beginning of the year, we weren't focused. We weren't ready. We're picking up the pace. We just have to keep going, keep doing what we're doing."
