READING-Twin Valley Varsity (12-2-1) secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BSIHL playoffs with an 8-4 win over Holy Name at the Reading Skate Center on March 8.
For the first 10 minutes of the game, Twin Valley's league leading defense appeared missing as Holy Name scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
However, Twin Valley's Eric Specht, Kyle Frey and Luke Peterson matched Holy Name's offense with three goals to tie the score at 3-3. Assisting on Valley's three first period goals were Mike Baionno, Brennan Lafferty and Luke Stoltzfus.
One of Twin Valley's defensemen, junior Jeff Spilar, suffered a leg injury while stretching during warm-ups. Although, he tried to play, Spilar ultimately removed himself from the game after only three shifts during which Holy Name scored two goals while he was on the ice.
"I just wanted to try to help my team, but realized I wasn't. So I took myself out,' said a dejected Spilar, after the game. His injury may be season ending.
Holy Name notched a goal ten minutes into the second period to take the lead, 4-3. Twin Valley then took control of the game with two quick goals from Stoltzfus and Baionno. TV's Balogh assisted on the Stoltzfus goal and Stoltzfus and Lafferty assisted on Baionno's goal.
With the score 5-4 in favor of the Raiders, the third period was all Twin Valley as the Green and White put away Holy Name with three more goals. Stoltzfus, Frey and Balogh scored with assists going to Baionno on the Stoltzfus goal and Stoltzfus on the Balogh goal. Frey's goal was unassisted.
The final regular season game was on March 14 against Holy Name. Holy Name's Nick Trainer scored three second period goals to defeat Twin Valley, 3-2, in the regular season finale for both varsity teams.
Twin Valley's defense held Holy Name in check during the first period, allowing only two shots on goal. However, one minute into the second period, Trainer scored his first goal, then his second at the seven minute mark. With 2:24 left in the second period, Trainer, followed with his third goal for a hat trick.
Down, 3-0, Twin Valley's Frey scored with only 53 seconds left in the second period, with an assist going to Jesse Boughter. Then, 43 seconds later, Balogh scored for the Raiders, with Boughter assisting to bring Twin Valley to within one at the end of two periods of play.Ã¥
Twin Valley put on a strong charge during the third period, resulting in several scoring opportunities. But, three Twin Valley penalties and Holy Name's defense denied the Raiders a comeback.
