One of the victims from the Interstate 78 Berks County fatal crash has been identified.
State Police Hamburg investigated a fatal crash on I-78 westbound at mile marker 32.5, Windsor Township at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 14.
West bound traffic was slowing and stopped in both westbound lanes for a single lane construction zone around mile marker 29 westbound. A tractor trailer was travelling westbound and was unable to stop for the traffic ahead. That tractor trailer first struck a passenger vehicle. That vehicle was then pushed into the rear of a tractor trailer. The chain reaction crash consisted of 5 tractor trailers and one passenger vehicle. There was heavy fire involving two tractor trailers and the passenger vehicle. There were 3 injuries and 2 fatalities.
State Police reported that Kathryn Schurtz, 35, from Jersey City, N.J. was one of the fatalities. Cause of death is pending the report from the Forensic Pathologist.
The highway was completely shut down for more than four hours. East bound traffic began moving in one lane around 7 p.m. Both west bound lanes remained closed for the investigation and clean up until 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 15.
Numerous Fire Departments from Berks, Lehigh, Lebanon, and Schuylkill Counties assisted at the scene.
