On May 6, Virginville Grange held its annual community night with 260 people in attendance. Members of Virginville Grange and granges throughout the region filled the audience with more than forty non-grangers from the local communities. The evening was dedicated to promoting the benefits of being a granger, as well as highlighting Virginville Grange members’ accomplishments and other local community organizations. The theme for the evening’s program was “Aloha! It’s a Hawaiian Luau at Virginville Grange: Fly to this getaway for a night of Grange family fun!” Grangers performed Hawaii related skits, told jokes, and sang songs to entertain the audience.

Giving back to the community was an important part of the event. The following organizations were presented with financial donations on behalf of Virginville Grange: Community Fire Company of Virginville ($750), Hamburg Game Association ($250), Kempton Rod & Gun Club ($250), and Lenhartsville Fish & Game ($250). Merrill and Judy Moyer, Fleetwood, were the recipients of the member-voted 2014 Virginville Granger of the Year Award. Merrill and Judy volunteer their time to support many causes of Virginville Grange. Currently, Merrill serves as a member of the Executive Committee and they are both actively involved with the fundraising committee. Norman O. Merkel, Windsor Township, was honored as the organization’s longest membership holder, commemorating his 81st consecutive year as a member of Virginville Grange.

Membership awards were presented to the following: 65 years: Richard G. Kershner, Ruth M. Kershner and Russell O. Miller; 55 years: Dorothy V. Bechtel, Carl E. Hollenbach, Jerilyn A. Peters and Nancy M. Peters; 50 years: Harold M. Adam, Walter R. Adams, Arlan C. Krick and Mark W. Stitzel; 40 years: Thomas J. Heffner, Neil E. Hoffman, Jane E. Krick, Lila M. Newhard and Ronald E. Newhard; 25 year: Faye M. Heckman, Elaine J. Miller and Jo Ann K. Peters.

The Community Service Committee of Virginville Grange, in conjunction with Thrivent Financial, made a monetary presentation of $4,500 to Terry (Gough) Yeager to aid with medical expenses. These funds were the result of a benefit bingo held in March at Virginville Grange and include a $750 donation by Thrivent.

A memorial service was held for grange members who have passed away during the past year and a flower was presented in memory of each of the following: Lawrence T. Sunday (49 year member), Deanna L. (Merkel) Burk (29 year member), Mary C. (Strause) Adams (12 year member), David L. Bausher (53 year member), P. William Stitzel (68 year member), Doris L. (Follweiler) Woerner (7 year member), Grace M. (Krick) Sunday (65 year member), Robert Van Tiggelen (20 year member), Retta A. (Sharp) Rimby (2 year member), and Dolores P. Fenstermaker (80 year member).

Door prizes, donated by local businesses and grange members, followed the program and refreshments and fellowship concluding the evening.
