The Wyomissing Area High School Boys Soccer Team has high hopes of improving on last year's record of 9-10-1."The 2008 team is working hard this season with a goal of reaching the county and district playoffs," said coach Dan Bergey.
Last year's team qualified for the district playoffs and lost in the playoff game to Conrad Weiser 3-1.
"The highlight of the season was winning the Wyomissing Labor Day Weekend Tournament," said Bergey.
Senior Stephen Paolini and junior Brian Allen were named to the Second Team All-County in 2007. Bergey said key losses this season are midfielder David Folino, midfielder Ethan Brown and defender Stephen Paolini.
But with the leadership of 12 seniors, Bergey is hoping to make a big impact on the field. "The strength of the team lies in the experience level of the key players of the team," said Bergey.
The seniors include captains Brian Allen, Sam Meister and David Benusa. "Many of the seniors have started or played significant minutes over the past few years and have gained valuable playoff experience," he added.
Other athletes to look out for will be Chris Sihelnik (senior), Casey McCurdy (senior) and Taylor Shields (junior).
The team moved up to Berks County League Division III and will play larger schools that have had very good seasons in the recent years, said Bergey. "The hardest part of the season will be starting the league schedule with Brandywine Heights and Oley Valley," Bergey added.
