A 16-year-old boy was killed Friday night, May 29, when his vehicle struck a tree in Alsace Township, state police said.
Brennan Gumeniski, a 10th-grade student at Oley Valley High School, was on his way home from a friend’s house when the accident occurred, according to Dr. Tracy S. Shank, Oley Valley School District superintendent.
Brennan was a member of the Future Farmers of America, a strong leader and friend, Shank said.
The superintendent expressed condolences to Brennan’s family and friends.
“We are very saddened by this tragic event,” Shank said. “We have an angel around to guide and protect us now. The school and the community are here for support.”
The boy died when the vehicle struck the tree in the 200 block of Apple Lane, troopers said.
Investigators said it was raining and the roadway was wet at the time of the crash. There were no passengers.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m. by Berks County Deputy Coroner Sarah Shivers.
According to troopers:
The vehicle was traveling west on Apple Lane at a high speed when it careened off the northern berm and struck the tree.
The vehicle was partially wrapped around the tree, and the driver’s door could not open.
There was no evidence that the driver had attempted to brake. The vehicle was sliding sideways before the crash.
Troopers said an investigating is ongoing.
