I am a firm believer of newspaper journalism and coverage.
Although I am a young adult who spends most of my time on my cell phone and computer, my parents instilled the value of newspapers at a very early age. They explained that newspapers can cover events and meetings unlike any other communication mediums.
Subscribers of our local paper, The Altoona Mirror, they would have me read about events that occurred in the schools and area. The great thing about having that newspaper coverage is the newspaper would come and cover events that the local television station would not.
Seeing that type of coverage made me realize I wanted to be the same type of shoe leather journalist I idolized growing up. The ability to be in the community and tell the story that everyone needed and wanted to know, whether it is good or bad, is something I aspired to do.
In my role as The Boyertown Area Times editor, that aspiration has been fulfilled. Serving since February, I believe I have been able to enact positive change in the paper, bringing a local, personal approach to coverage, and instituting features that spotlight what your neighbors are doing for one another. My feeling is when everyone learns about one another, it brings the community closer.
My other goal has been to bring the paper into the 21st century. By placing The Times on Facebook and Twitter, and uploading stories daily on our website, www.berksmontnews.com, we are able to reach out to a broader audience, presenting the important, community-based news.
However, more work needs to be done, and that is where you come in.
As the editor, I would like to know your opinion of the paper and what you like, dislike, would change and keep the same. Your opinion greatly matters and your feelings will help make The Times a great publication.
I am interested in talking to our readers about this, which I feel will spur some great ideas and promote healthy change. You can feel free to e-mail me at email@example.com or call at 610-367-6041, ext. 640. I can also be reached through mail at 24 N. Hanover St., Pottstown, PA. 19464.
I look forward to speaking with you and hearing the great opinions that will come from this.
